A Witch’s Tale
I haven't come across a human in a while now. I live in the heart of the woods of sorrow. No human actually comes here, probably because they are all scared of the rumors those old men are spreading. God I hate them so much.
I used to go to the village nearby once in a while, but that was 300 years ago. I used to transform into a human. I am a witch, of course I can do all these things. Back in the day, about 300 years ago, I was friends with a lot of humans but I was chased away from the village because a man accused me of killing his sheep. Just because I am a witch doesn't mean I do all those horrible things to poor helpless animals.
Being a witch has always bothered me in every way possible with all the evil things those people did to me. Why am I still kind towards them, you ask? Well that's because I have a forgiving nature. Even though I sometimes want to exact revenge upon the people who have wronged me, I always end up forgiving them after a while. My life had been this way for the last 300 years. So, I decided to live in the heart of the woods of sorrow away from all those people.
Since I haven't been to human society in a while, I am probably a myth to the new generations now. I am probably known as the man-eating witch or the evil witch now. But I don't care about it . Still I really want to meet humans again. However they treat me, I just can't seem to live a lonely life. I am a kind hearted witch, but no one seems to get that. I just want to meet a human again, that's all I am asking. I can't live a lonely life forever, can I ? And i'm already 586 years old !!
One day I was spending time in my house of sweets when suddenly I heard a distant noise from the woods. I peered through my window and saw two children on their way towards my cottage.
Gosh! It's been a while since I last saw a human. My, My!! I finally have company in my house. They sure look hungry.
"Oh! Hansel, Look over there, there is a small cottage made up of sweets!" said the little chubby girl.
"It really is a house made up of sweets, Gretel ! Are we dreaming?!" said the elder boy.
Then those poor kids promptly started chomping on my house complementing it's taste. I wanted to talk to them but I didn't want to scare them away with my looks. So, I used my wand and turned my skinny, long fingers and pointy nose, into normal human sized body parts. I appeared as an old lady and went out to greet them.
"Oh ! poor children, you seem very hungry and tired, why don't you come in? I will treat you with proper meal" I said trying to sound like a human of course.
I think the kids felt safe seeing an old grandma offering food . They happily agreed and came in. I swung my wand inconspicuously and brought them some food. I asked, " Did you get lost?"
They nodded oh poor kids, I thought. They seemed pretty tired too, so I offered my cottage for them to spend the night in. At first they hesitated but eventually they agreed. I went to the rooms and prepared the beds for them with my wand. Apparently, one of the kids saw me cast the spell. I, however, failed to notice that at the time. I fed them till their tiny bellies were full and sent them to their rooms to sleep.
I was feeling elated to finally meet some humans. Meanwhile, Hansel told his sister that I was a witch and was probably planning to eat them. So, they prepared a plan of their own. The next day I decided to cook for the kids, so I woke up at the crack of dawn and started preparing a veritable feast of every kind of delicacy I could think of.
Hansel and Gretel had planned to run away in the first glance of the sun in the morning but their plan was foiled when they realised that I was already awake and buzzing about the house humming some merry tune. When I called them for breakfast, they came out of their rooms feeling terrified, yet trying to act normal. The moment I turned my back towards them to get something off the stove, Hansel whispered something in his sisters ears and started running towards me which I failed to notice. Suddenly, Hansel pushed me into the furnace and locked the door. I heard them say," Die! you witch! " I felt like my heart shattered into a million pieces. The very people I took care of tried to kill me. I felt so deflated that I didn't even try to escape. I saw them busting out of the door running for their lives.
How could they do this? When did they figure out I was a witch? How could they wildly assume that I would eat them? Numerous questions were in my head. They pushed me in the furnace with hot coals and fire. But little did they know, witches are fire proof!
