FIGHTING BACK AGAINST DIGITAL ADDICTION
2025-09-13
Digital addiction is emerging as a huge problem in today’s society. People often spend too much time online, using phones, computers, or playing games, which can have many negative effects on their lives. Some people also stay up all day and night browsing the internet, and when they finally want to stop, they might still continue on for a few more hours before they actually do, which is a clear sign of addiction.
Such behavior is a clear indication of digital addiction and can result in several negative consequences. One of these major effects is less time spent on real-life activities which can lead to people being lazy, ignoring responsibilities, and less quality time spent with family and friends. “The availability of smartphones and the potential to use these in late evening and at bedtime may profoundly change adolescents’ sleep patterns” (Xie et al). People can also feel anxious, bored, or restless which could lead to headaches and deterioration of health. It can affect a person's mood, causing sadness, stress, or anger, especially when comparing themselves to others online, which has become a common occurrence in our digital age. Effects on a person's sleep leading to many health problems are also rising in number and intensity.
People become addicted to digital devices for many reasons. These devices are always nearby and easy to use, making it simple to go online at any time. Fun and exciting apps, games, and videos are designed to keep people interested for long periods. Many people turn to their phones or computers when they feel bored, and they often end up spending more time than they planned. Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO) also makes people check their phones often so they don’t miss messages, updates, or trends. Social pressure from friends who expect quick replies or want to play online games adds to this habit. Getting likes, comments, or shares on social media feels rewarding, encouraging more use. Without time limits or rules, screen time can quickly get out of control. Some people also use the internet as a way to escape stress, sadness, or loneliness, which can make digital addiction even stronger over time.
There are many ways to prevent digital addiction. One way is to set time limits for using phones, computers, or games each day and try to follow them strictly. Taking regular breaks from screens can help rest our eyes and keep our body active. Using apps which track our screen time usage can remind you when it’s time to stop. Turning off notifications reduces distractions and helps you stay focused at the task at hand. It's also a good idea to have tech-free times, such as during meals, before sleeping, or while studying, and allocating them as family time or such.
Finding other fun activities like playing outdoor games, reading, drawing, or spending time with family and friends can keep you busy without screens. Keeping devices out of the bedroom can improve your sleep and reduce late-night screen use. Talking to friends, parents, or teachers about your screen habits can also help, especially if you feel it’s becoming a problem.
Trying to be aware of why you're using your device is the first step towards finding a better and healthier way to occupy your time. It takes time to build healthy habits, but small changes can make a big difference in the long run. In the end, finding balance between screen time and real-life activities is key to living a happier and healthier life.
