Namaste my name is Kenjalina Maka from Everest English School. I study in Grade VII, Swayambhu. In my free time, I like to draw some pictures. Today, I brought an article about Bisket Jatra.

Bisket Jatra is the largest Jatra celebrated in Bhaktapur . It is an annual event in Bhaktapur, Madhyapur, Tokha and other places in Nepal. It is celebrated for eight and nine days. Bisket Jatra is the most colorful festival of Bhaktapur which is annually celebrated on the new year’s day of Bikram Sambat. It is celebrated at the end of Chaitra. Bisket Jatra is celebrated to remember the story of Serpents, to explore the glory of different gods and goddesses, especially Bhairav and Bhadrakali and to Welcome to the spring season.

Long ago, King Jagat Jyoti Malla of Bhaktapur first initiated the
celebration of Bisket Jatra in Bhaktapur. He was fascinated with the story related to vilification of a princess where she became a widow each day. The cursed princess whose husband dies the next morning of the marriage. The young man quickly killed the snakes with his sword and broke the princess’s curse of serpents. King Jagat Jyoti Malla loved this myth and wished it to be remembered with happiness and prosperity.

People celebrate and hare greetings, throw simrik color powder and
play Dhimay music. One resident spends the whole day with an iron spike piercing his touges and roams the city by carrying multiple fiery torches on his shoulders. Bisket Jatra denotes the culmination of the Nepali month of Chaitra and the start of a New Nepali Year in Baisakh.

Bisket Jatra is the main festival of Newars in Bhaktapur. Bisket Jatra is derived from the Newari word Bi and Syaku . The meaning of Bisyaku is snake laughter. The occasion was called Bisyaku and also known as Bisket Jatra. When the chariot of god, Bhairav is pulled by both parties of Upper tole and Lower tole people like a Tug Of War. The winner The team lead the Chariot on their tole.

Some ways to be safe when Bisket Jatra begins. We shouldn’t fight with
others and we shouldn’t go near the Chariot and Lingo in an unsafe fashion and should maintain proper distance unless we are experienced and our help is needed. Thank you.

We value every student in our care and it is our aim to provide quality education with the best environment possible.
