An Ant's Picnic

"This is my favorite time of year," exclaimed Albert Ant. "There's no better time than summer and do you know why?" he asked the others.

“Because it’s hot?" answered Amanda.

"No because in summer almost every family in town comes to the park for a picnic. You know what that means," Albert said.

"I know," shouted Andrew, "It means Frisbees hitting our tree, balls rolling over us and water balloons splashing and washing us into the mud”.

“You’re right about that, Andrew but most of all it means food, lots and lots of food," Albert reminded them of last summer.

The rest of the ants that lived with Albert under the bark of tall oak tree in the park began to scream. “Food! Food!”

“Let's be sure to pick the right picnic people. We need to watch carefully to see who has the most“, Arthur suggested. The ants hid under the bank where a small family was the first to arrive. The ants watched as the picnickers spread out a blanket on the grass.

"I smell cheeseburgers and chips" whispered Alice."Let’s go"

"Not yet we can do better than this," Albert said, holding Alice back. So they waited and drooled as the family began to eat the food from the basket.

"I see lots of chips," Alan giggled. While the ants were watching the family, another family also arrived and soon the park was full of families.

Amanda was very happy because if they collected some food from all the families they could celebrate a big feast but ant Albert said "Stop imagining. We don't even know if we can get that food". After Albert said this Amanda was very sad. Suddenly it started raining, and the family rushed back home leaving their food stuff in the park. The ants merrily collected all the food they could possibly carry and took it back to their home under the tree bark. Some collected chips, some collected chocolate, some collected burgers and some collected cake. They celebrated a huge feast and were very joyful.

The ants were far smaller than people so even after eating their fill a whole lot of food was left over. So they decided to go for a picnic following day. As soon as the sun rose they excitedly went to the park carrying with them their picnic supplies. They enjoyed themselves, eating yummy food, dancing, singing, and playing silly games. For the next hour they sat in the tall grass, looking up through the trees at the many colored fireworks exploding above them. They enjoyed listening to the children laughing all around them. "I love summer," Albert said. “It’s my favourite time of year."
